In true American style, designer, Rela Gleason imbues her design projects with her multi-cultural background. She was born in the Middle East to an Israeli father and a Czeck mother who married in Italy while serving in the British Forces during World War II. She was raised in Belgium, schooled in New York and New England , and speaks four languages. With a degree in art history, a discerning eye, and a passion for devouring design books Rela tackled a hands on redesign of a San Francisco bungalow and her carreer was launched.
Rela opened APROPOS, a retail home accessories shop with a small design studio in Menlo Park, California. To stock her inventory she mixed the old with the new - the high with the low - a style she still adheres to. She travels to Europe and across the United States hunting antique stores and flea markets for treasures destined for her design clients. She also creates one of a kind furniture pieces as projects require.
Rela served as founder and creative director of Summer Hill Ltd from 1985-2011. She is responsible for all of the designs in the company archives.
For her interior design projects she garners inspiration from the clients themselves, getting to know them well so that their homes are reflective portraits. Her style is classic, innovative, chic and always user friendly.
Rela’s work has appeared in ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST, ELLE DECOR, HOUSE BEAUTIFUL and VERANDA
